RBT Competency Corner Confidentiality in Clinic Setting

Led by Megan Jones and Erica Yuen

Join us for this RBT Ethics PDU exploring professionalism, client dignity, and confidentiality in a clinic setting. The session walks through how to use the RBT ethics code and task list to identify potential conflicts, assess ethical dilemmas, and prepare for a collaborative conversation with a peer or supervisor.

Through a realistic vignette involving an RBT venting about a client's behavior within earshot of caregivers, the speakers unpack why casual comments about clients can compromise dignity and confidentiality, even in clinics where families already know a shared diagnosis is common. They share practical strategies for redirecting these moments in real time, having a private and empathetic follow-up conversation with a coworker, and recognizing when a broader cultural reset led by a BCBA or clinical director is needed. The discussion also covers how to structure a supportive conversation before, during, and after it happens, along with specific language to use and avoid.
